The Delphin Name

The name Delphin was derived from the name Delphinus. Delphinus (the Dolphin) has appeared in mythology twice.

Once when Arion, a famous poet and musician, was sailing back to Greece.  Having just acquired much wealth, the crew planned to steal his treasure and toss him to the sea. As a final request, Arion used his musical talents to summon up creatures of the deep, among them a school of dolphins.  Then throwing himself into the sea, he was then carried safely to Greece on the back of one of the dolphins.  As a result, Apollo rewarded the dolphin’s actions with a place among the stars.

The other, as a dolphin that helped Poseidon find the mermaid Amphitrite after she ran off to hide from him.  Delphinus was able to find her, convince her to marry Poseidon and she returned to be Poseidon’s Queen. As gratitude, Poseidon placed the dolphin among the stars.
